For the first time in my life, I created a house without compromising. I put my whole personality in it. I wanted to create a soothing, calming, healthy place, where one can relax and be inspired at the same time.
— Brigitte, the owner and designer behind the Rivertown Guest House

Rivertown Guesthouse, an elegant Italianate Victorian, was renovated by local artisans under the current owner’s expert guidance to create a space that is both rustic and tranquil. Her timeless style has resulted in a home that is clean and uncluttered, yet warm and inviting from the moment you step in through the stately original double doors.

Designed as an “up and down” two-family, it can easily be converted back to a single-family home. The first-floor apartment is a large one bedroom with an office area while the second-floor unit has two bedrooms. At the back of this rare double lot is a sleek black “tiny” house with a kitchenette and bathroom.

The tall ceilings and newly installed waxed wood floors and windows are juxtaposed against the meticulously restored original details. Window moldings, door corners with carved rosettes, and a functioning pocket door define the aesthetic of Hudson’s revival better than almost any other property in the area. Yet, the house has a very northern European feel to it with a neutral palette and wood details blending in rather than standing out.

The guest house in the back offers the perfect respite from the main house, with its own kitchenette and full bath. In contrast to the main house's brilliant white color and historic silhouette, the tiny house is jet black and modern in its composition. It can be used as an office, studio, or short-term rental.

Landscaping is exquisite with lush, flowering gardens from late spring to early fall. The backyard terrace features more than one perfect nook for intimate candlelit dinners with friends and family and enough room for large summer gatherings.

Located in the heart of Hudson on a quiet residential block, the Rivertown Guesthouse is just a minute away from Warren Street and its renowned eateries, unique shops, and avant-garde art galleries. Due to its unbeatable location, the home has an established brand as a short term rental with a strong earnings history.

New York City is just two hours away and the Amtrak station is a five-minute walk.

While many of the original 19th-century details remain, modern amenities have been added to create a peaceful balance.

Her project was chosen as a finalist by Remodelista editor in chief Julie Carlson, who said, “Rustic and tranquil without veering into quaint territory. The placid palette and repeating wooden elements play a lovely duet.”

AND NORTH

“I chose to live in Hudson because I fell in love with the creative community, but also with the surrounding soft hills of Columbia County,” says Brigitte, a Switzerland native who has lived all over the world, building and fixing up all types of homes, and along the way, has cultivated a very distinctive aesthetic.

In 2014, it all came together with Rivertown Guest House, an award-winning renovation that took a few skilled contractors and some vital encouragement and advice from her daughter and son-in-law, who together co-own the Brooklyn- and Charleston-based design firm Workstead.

WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Rivertown Guest House is as close as you can come to living the upstate dream. This exclusive property in the city of Hudson in upstate New York is the work of Brigitte, a Swiss expat who has lived all over the world fixing up homes and now resides in Hudson.

Hudson is often considered the heart of upstate, with thanks to its huge creative community and flourishing businesses that line the main street, Warren Street, with concept stores, cute cafes and vintage thrifts stores galore.
